Words can barely describe the beauty of this scenic route in the Canadian Rockies. Almost every viewpoint, trail or pull-out on its 230 km is simply stunning.
As we are travelling in the RV for such a long time, we could allow us to take 4 days and 4 nights to enjoy this scenic route.
We could not visit Jasper city due to a heavy wildfire and power shortage, so we drove directly to Honeymoon Lake, our campground for the first two nights. We used the time here to explore the first 50 kilometres of the highway, including a hike to the Valley of Five Lakes, the Athabasca Falls and the Sunwapta Falls.
Our home for the third night was the Wilcox campground, just next to the Columbia Icefield and its visitor centre, offering great views of North America’s most visited glacier and lots of information about the glaciers and wildlife inside the national park.
We continued our way to Mosquito Creek, for the last night on this beautiful road. It was a good base camp to visit the Mistaya Canyon, Peyto Lake and Bow Lake.
The final destination when starting in Jasper are two very popular and famous lakes – Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. It was almost the end of the season and the campground was still fully booked every night. During our 4 days here we enjoyed the beautiful area by visiting both lakes and taking the Sightseeing Gondola. Massimo and Brian even got up for an early morning hike fto see the sunrise at Lake Louise.
