Highway 99 – Hello Mainland

We hoped off the ferry from Vancouver Island in Horseshoe Bay and started northwards on Highway 99. On our way up we stopped on beautiful viewpoints, visited several waterfalls and  did our first hike: Joffrey Lakes. The 3 lakes lie on different altitudes at the foot of an impressive glacier. Their crystal clear and turquoise water is definitely worth the 4 hours effort.

We continued to Lillooet, a nice small town where we saw our first black bear in the creek next to the day-use area. So we could check another box on our Canada bucket list.

A few minutes later, the whole area was filled with countless cars from a huge vintage car rally.

Our next destination was the Wells Grey National Park. It is known for its more than 40 waterfalls and good wildlife viewing opportunities. We did several hikes to gorgeous waterfalls here and the Monti family saw the second bear on the trip, another black bear eating berries next to the highway. Wells Gray also offers a good spot to see salmons jumping up the river – the Bailey’s Chute.

Our last stop before getting to the famous Icefields Parkway was Valemount. We took some time on a calm campground either to relax and celebrate our 10th anniversary with a delicious dinner in a typical Canadian restaurant.
