We continued our way up the East Coast from Sydney to Brisbane and Fraser Island.
This part of the coast was not as wild as the first part, but is very famous for surfing and a popular holiday destination for Australians. The weather got better with every kilometer we drove and we could finally take our first swim in the Pacific Ocean. Every time we stop at the coastline, we are amazed by the million shades of blue you can see almost everywhere here. The water can be quite chilly though ;).
We stopped at many beautiful spots on our way to Fraser Island like Lake Macquarie, Nelson Bay, Port Macquarie, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga where we were lucky to see some humpback whales playing around, Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise where we met up with Anja from our Safari in Africa and the center of Brisbane.
After the short city escape to Brisbane, we made our way further up to Noosa Heads, where good friends from Vilafranca were waiting for us. Fran and Núria are in Australia since the beginning of this year and are currently traveling down the East Coast. We had lots of fun during the 3 great days we spend together, exploring the Eumundi Market and Noosa Heads National Park.
Noosa Heads is just a 1,5 hours drive away from Rainbow Beach, the closest place to Fraser Island. That‘s where we started on our 3 day Fraser Island 4WD Tour. It is the world‘s largest sand island with vivid vegetation and lots of wildlife, including the biggest population of wild dingos. Exploring the island while driving a jeep on the sand and off-road tracks is a unique experience and places like Lake McKenzie, the Maheno shipwreck or the endless kilometers of beaches are breathtaking!
When checking into the campground in Byron Bay we got a site next to a nice white campervan and it’s two cool owners, Kristina and Simon. They are a Lithuanian-British couple from London that‘s traveling the world for about 2 years. We started talking that afternoon and had a very nice evening chatting with some wine beside our vans. After saying our goodbyes the next morning, we ended up on the next campsite parking right next to each other again and spend another great evening with pizza in their van and the whole next morning visiting a koala sanctuary and searching for some wildlife on the walking tracks. Thanks guys for the great time and for letting us be the first guests in your cosy van :)! We hope to see you again soon on our way up to Cairns!
