Tropical island life in Mauritius

Our first two days on Mauritius were cloudy and rainy, so we thought „Well, it seems to be a nice island, but it does not fulfill our expectations…“. However, after several sunny days and tours to many different places, we can say that Mauritius is marvelous and offers lots of different activities for everybody!

We stayed in a small studio apartment at Ebrahim Flats in the center of Grand Baie. Grand Baie Public Beach is just across the street and we had a nice view on it from our balcony. You can find everything you need in Grand Baie: restaurants, bars and delicious street food as well as a big shopping center with a huge supermarket.

Typical Mauritian food we tried and liked was Halim (spicy lamb soup), Faratah (filled with beef and vetegables) and Octopus with a special Mauritian sauce.

During our 10 days here we enjoyed the tropical beaches and did several tours: two Catamaran tours to visit different islands around Mauritius (Île aux Cerf, Flat Island & Gabriel Island), a guided minibus tour to the South to see the volcano, the Seven Coloured Earth and the Chamarel waterfall and a speedboat tour to visit Crystal Rock and swim with wild dolphins. In general, all the boat tours included a delicious, rich barbecue and all drinks.

Snorkeling with the dolphins was definitely a highlight for us as we got very close to them and could fully enjoy snorkeling there. An unforgettable experience!

The cherry on top of the dolphin tour were two whales (a mother with her baby) that we saw from the boat shortly after.

We also took the chance to go diving in Grand Baie. The visibility under water is stunning and we discovered lots of small and big marine life like stone fish, scorpion fish, lion fish, leaf fish, crocodile fish, giant morays and a sting ray. See for yourself in the video below.

Awesome people we met

Mignon & Tony

We met this South-African couple on our Catamaran tour to Île aux Cerf. They approached us on the boat and we immediately had a very good connection with them. On their last day on Mauritius they kindly shared their South African wine with us. We had a great time during sunset at the beach and toasted on Mignon‘s 30th birthday. Thank you guys for the lovely wine and the nice time hanging out! We hope to see you soon somewhere around the world 🙂
